This story is from Ocean Adventures, published in the 1860s in Boston by John S. Sleeper. Mr. Sleeper was a sailor who took up journalism and wrote many salty stories about life at sea during the age of sail. His stories appeared occasionally in the Boston Newspaper and were collected in several anthologies.
